Reggaeton is a style of
Latin music that evolved from different genres with influences from various
countries. However, its origin is usually associated with Puerto Rico, where he
was given impetus and began to be commercially produced. Reggaeton is quickly
spread throughout the Spanish-speaking communities of the Americas during the
90s and has since achieved great popularity worldwide.
Reggaeton evolved from the
ragamuffin or "raga", a subgenre of electronic dance music which in
turn grew out of reggae and hip hop. Reggaeton itself is characterized by its
controversial lyrics in Spanish, both rapping and sung; his provocative style
and incorporating other Latin rhythms like bomba and salsa. Furthermore,
reggaeton can be identified by its rhythm "dembow", based mainly on
the pace of the box or snare drum and was first popularized by Shabba Ranks in
1991.
There is controversy about
the history and origins of reggaeton, combining different genres and musical
influences. The beginnings of reggaeton back to Panamanian reggae in Spanish,
which was an adaptation of Jamaican. However, the general consensus is that
reggaeton originated in Puerto Rico, where he gained popularity and evolved
into what it is today. Moreover, most of the most famous performers of the
genre are Puerto Rican. During development also was influenced by the American hip hop, Puerto Ricans and other rhythms of Latin American music influences.
Reggaeton began to spread and become popular with the help of DJ Playero, DJ Nelson and DJ Eric. Reggaeton was no longer a style of alternative music, but had made the leap to commercial Latin music. Some famous Reggaeton were Don Chenzina, Tempo, Master Joe & OG Black, Baby Rasta & Gringo, and Lito & Polaco.
